Description

A tall tropical tree, which grows up to 20 meters high with large, tender, fragrant flowers, which are pink, mauve or yellow. The yellow flowers are considered best for extraction of essential oil.

Characteristics

Sweet, floral, exotic and heavy.

Method of extraction

Fractional steam distillation to produce four grades of oil known as ylang ylang extra, first, second and third. ‘Complete’ ylang ylang oil is also produced by combining ylang ylang extra, first and second grade.

General

Ylang Ylang has a formidable reputation as an aphrodisiac, probably due to its ability to help deal with feelings of fear and anxiety. Also extensively used in perfumes as a base.

Blends well with

Bergamot, Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Lemon, Sweet Orange, Patchouli, Rosewood and Sandalwood.

Indications

Mind & Spirit – Has tension-relieving properties and is particularly beneficial for nervous depression that is accompanied by severe tension (vaporizer, bath or massage).

Body – Beneficial in treating PMS (massage).

Skin & Hair – Has a balancing effect on sebum making it effective on both oily and dry skin (compress, massage or blended in base cream or oil). Used in scalp oil to promote healthy hair.

Contraindications

Excessive use may lead to headaches & nausea.
